: an aquatic aglossate toad (Pipa pipa synonym P. americana) of the Guianas and parts of Brazil of which the eggs as they are laid are distributed by the male over the back of the female where they become embedded in the skin each in a separate cavity with a lid formed from the outer capsule of the egg and within which the tadpole lives and metamorphoses
