Etymology

borrowed from New Latin, of unknown origin

Note: Name introduced by the French naturalist Michel Adanson (1727-1806) in Familles des plantes, 2. partie (Paris, 1763), p. 496. The eponym is presumably someone named "Vagner" or "Wagner," but as with other generic names he introduced, Adanson left the origin obscure.
