Dutch, short for advocatenborrel, from advocaat lawyer (from Middle Dutch advocaet, from Latin advocatus one summoned to another) + borrel drink, bubble, from borrelen to bubble, alteration of Middle Dutch bordelen, bortelen, of imitative origin; from its throat-soothing effect, especially helpful for irritations caused by the traditional eloquence of lawyers
