Word History

Etymology

borrowed from Greek, combining form from ánthos "flower," neuter s-stem, of uncertain origin

Note: Greek ánthos was traditionally linked with Sanskrit andhas-, ándhaḥ "sprout of the soma plant," but this has been questioned; other proposed comparisons are still more tenuous.
