: an anticoagulant drug C₂₅H₂₅N₅O₄ that inhibits the activated form of factor X and is taken orally in the prevention and treatment of thromboembolic disease (such as deep vein thrombosis)

Apixaban has been shown to be superior to warfarin, with reductions in the risk of bleeding and mortality, and for persons in whom warfarin has unacceptable adverse effects, apixaban has been shown to be superior to aspirin.
