Etymology

borrowed from American Spanish (Chile), borrowed from Mapudungun foḻo

Note: The 'l' sound in the Mapudungun word is velarized and usually described as "interdental" (note the reflection in Spanish with 'ld'). It is denoted by an underlined 'l' in one of the standard Mapudungun orthographies. For the apparent variant boldú and forms in early botanical descriptions see the note at boldu .
