Note: Term introduced by the Austrian mineralogist and physicist Wilhelm von Haidinger (1795-1871) in his expanded translation (Treatise on Mineralogy, or the Natural History of the Mineral Kingdom, Edinburgh, 1825, vol. 1, p. 411) of Friedrich Mohs Grundriss der Mineralogie (Dresden, 1822). Breunner was a patron of both Mohs and Haidinger, and traveled with Haidinger to France and England in the 1820's.
