: thyroid
thyrotoxicosis

Word History

Etymology

combining form extracted from thyroid entry 2 or its source New Latin thyroīdēs

Note: As the Latin reflection of the Greek source is thyreoīdēs, the combining form should be thyreo-, but this has rarely been used. As noted at thyroid entry 2, the dropping of the -e- may have resulted from the assumption that the base word was Greek thýra "door" rather than thyreós "oblong shield."
