guidelines adopted by the American Bar Association in 1983 and periodically amended. These rules serve as models for state legislation governing lawyers, their relationships with their clients, and related matters (as advertising). All the states except California have enacted statutes based on the Model Rules. The Model Rules supersede the ABA Model Code of Professional Responsibility.
