Northern Securities Co. v. United States

U.S. Case Law

193 U.S. 197 (1904), revived the all-but-forgotten Sherman Antitrust Act by “trust-busting” a holding company (Northern Securities) and two railroads as a combination in restraint of trade. This was the first of 43 similar cases brought during the following seven years that steadily nibbled away at the United States v. E. C. Knight Co. decision and culminated in Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey v. United States.
