: a genus of imperfect fungi of the order Moniliales found especially in the soil that includes the causative agents of white piedra and several forms which occur as commensals (as on the skin and in the gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts) but which may disseminate (as to the lungs or liver) in the body to cause serious infection especially in immunocompromised individuals
