: a genetic disorder of zinc absorption that is marked by symptoms of zinc deficiency including diarrhea, hair loss, and inflamed skin lesions especially on the elbows, knees, hands, feet, and around body openings (such as of the mouth and anus) and that is often associated with increased frequency of infection

Note: The symptoms of acrodermatitis enteropathica can be controlled with lifelong oral zinc supplementation. Acrodermatitis enteropathica is inherited as a recessive autosomal trait requiring that both parents pass on a copy of the defective gene on a chromosome other than a sex chromosome.
