borrowed from New Latin (in German context), from peri- peri- + Greek my-, mŷs "mouse, muscle" + New Latin -ium -ium, after periosteum periosteum and perichondrium perichondrium — more at mouse entry 1

Note: The term was introduced by the German physician and anatomist Johann Christian August Clarus (1774-1854) in Annalen des königlichen klinischen Instituts am St. Jakobshospital in Leipzig, 1. Band, 2 Abteilung, Nr. 3 (see Leipziger Literatur-Zeitung, Nr. 300, am 1. Dezember, 1812, p. 2399). Note that the combinatory form of mŷs should be my- rather than mys-.
