Why are people looking up invasion?

Invasion was among our top lookups on November 7th, 2018, following a combative exchange between Donald Trump and CNN reporter Jim Acosta.

The president was taking questions from reporters after making remarks about a ā€œtremendous successā€ in the midterms and called on Acosta, who repeatedly asked why Trump had labeled the migrant caravan in Mexico as an invasion of the country.

What does invasion mean?

Invasion has definitions both literal (ā€œan act of invadingā€) and somewhat figurative (ā€œthe incoming or spread of something usually hurtfulā€). The word may also be found employed with relatively neutral meaning (such as the British Invasion of the 1960s, in which pop music from the UK enjoyed great popularity in the US), a sense that we define as ā€œan inroad of any kind.ā€

Where does invasion come from?

Invasion may be traced back to the Latin invadere (ā€œto invadeā€), but came to English, appropriately enough, as the result of an invasion itself, taken into Middle English from the Anglo-French after the Norman conquest of the British Isles in the 11th century. The word has been in use in English since the 15th century.
